Double Glazed vs Triple Glazed: What Is Worth It in Sydney?
Triple glazing has a certain appeal: if two panes are good, three must be better. In the cold climates of northern Europe that logic holds. In Sydney, the answer is more nuanced, and spending on the wrong upgrade is easy to do.
What the third pane adds
A third pane and second air gap improve thermal insulation and add some acoustic benefit. The frame has to be built to carry the extra weight, and the unit is thicker and heavier. In a genuinely cold climate, or a Passive House build, that extra performance earns its place.
When double glazing is the right call
For most Sydney homes, a well-specified double glazed unit in an insulated uPVC frame already delivers the large comfort and cost gains. The jump from single glazing to double glazing is dramatic. The jump from double to triple is smaller here, and the money is often better spent on the correct glass, better frames or acoustic laminates for a noise problem.

- Building to Passive House standard is a clear case for triple glazing
- General comfort and lower bills are well served by quality double glazing
