Triple Glazed Windows in Sydney

We build triple glazed units, and we will tell you honestly whether your home is one of the ones that needs them.

Triple glazing adds a third pane and a second sealed cavity to the unit. Each cavity resists heat flow, so on paper the thermal number improves - and in Northern and Central Europe, where the standard originates, that improvement is decisive. Sydney is a different problem, and the honest answer is that most homes here do not need a third pane.

Where the benefit flattens out

The first cavity does most of the work. Going from single to double glazing is a step change; going from double to triple is an incremental gain on top of a number that is already good. In a climate with mild winters, the extra thermal resistance has fewer cold hours to act across, so the annual benefit is much smaller than the specification sheet suggests.

Meanwhile the unit gets heavier, which means heavier hardware and a heavier frame. It also gets slightly darker, because every additional pane and coating cuts visible light transmission - not usually a problem, but worth knowing in a south-facing room that is already dim.

The noise misconception

The most common reason people ask us for triple glazing is noise, and it is the one case where it is most often the wrong answer. Acoustic performance comes from mass, from asymmetry and from damping - not from pane count. Three equal panes in equal cavities resonate together and can perform no better than a good double glazed unit. A double glazed unit built with two different glass thicknesses, one of them acoustic laminated, will typically beat a naive triple glazed unit on noise while costing less. Our double glazed acoustic specification reaches up to 45dB of reduction. When triple glazing is the right call

  • Certified Passive House projects - the standard's envelope targets are demanding enough that triple glazing is effectively required. As Sydney's only German Passive House certified installer, this is work we do regularly.
  • Cold-climate NSW - the upper Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands, the Snowy region and anywhere with a genuine winter rather than a mild one
  • NatHERS or BASIX targets that a double glazed specification cannot reach on a heavily glazed design
  • Very large glazed elevations, where glass is such a large proportion of the wall that its performance dominates the whole thermal result
  • Condensation-critical interiors - pools, conservatories and similar high-humidity spaces where keeping the inner pane warm matters more than usual

What we build

Triple glazed units are available across the full window range, in the same five and six chambered European uPVC profiles from Aluplast, Kommerling, Deceuninck, Plustec and Schuco. Because our frames are rated for insulated glass units up to 44mm, a triple glazed make-up fits comfortably rather than at the limit - which is not true of many slimmer systems sold in Australia. Hardware is upgraded to suit the sash weight, and the frames still reach U-values as low as 0.77 W/m²K.

Common questions

Triple glazing, answered

For most Sydney homes, no. The climate is mild enough that double glazing with the right Low-E coating captures the large majority of the available benefit, and the same additional spend put into acoustic laminated glass usually produces a bigger improvement you can actually feel. Triple glazing is worth it for Passive House projects, for the coldest parts of the Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands, and where a certification or a NatHERS target sets the requirement rather than everyday comfort.
The additional pane, the wider spacer, the second Low-E coating and the extra gas fill all add cost, and the heavier unit needs correspondingly heavier hardware. The premium varies with size and specification, so we price triple glazing against your actual openings at the measure rather than publishing a percentage that would mislead.
Not necessarily, and this is the most common misconception. Three panes of equal thickness in equal cavities can perform no better acoustically than a well-specified double glazed unit, because the panes resonate together. Acoustic performance comes from mass, from asymmetric pane thicknesses and from a laminated interlayer. A double glazed unit with 6.38mm acoustic laminate on one side and a different thickness on the other will usually out-perform a naive triple glazed unit on noise, for less money.
Yes. Our European uPVC profiles are rated for insulated glass units up to 44mm thick, which accommodates triple glazed make-ups comfortably. That headroom is unusual - many slimmer frames on the Australian market cannot physically take a triple glazed unit at all, which is why triple glazing is often quoted as unavailable rather than as unsuitable.
It depends on the whole assembly rather than the pane count alone. Our frames reach as low as 0.77 W/m2K, and the glazed unit contributes according to its cavity widths, gas fill and coatings. The number that matters on a certificate is the whole-of-window U-value, not the centre-of-glass figure, and we quote it for the specification you are actually buying.
