The Technology Inside a Multi-Chamber uPVC Frame

The performance of a uPVC window is not an accident of the material, it is engineered into the shape of the frame. Cut one open and you see why it insulates so much better than a hollow aluminium extrusion.
Sealed chambers
The frame is divided into five or six separate internal chambers, each a sealed pocket of still air. Still air is a poor conductor, so each chamber is another barrier heat has to cross. This is the same principle as double glazing, applied to the frame itself, and it is why the whole-window U-value can reach as low as 0.77 W/m2K.
Strength where it counts
Larger frames are reinforced internally with steel or composite sections so big panels stay straight and operate smoothly for decades. Corners are welded rather than mechanically joined, which creates a continuous, weathertight frame with no gaps for air or water to work through.
The glass connection
- Warm-edge spacers separate the panes while limiting heat transfer at the edge of the glass
- Double or triple glazing sits in a deep rebate designed for insulated glass units up to 44mm thick
- Multi-point locking hardware pulls the sash tight against the seals at several points
